Six-year-old Georg lives in a small German village in the Caspian region of Turkmenistan. World War II is raging very far away, but in 1941 its effects suddenly reach the isolated community. One day, Russian soldiers arrive and announce that the ethnic Germans will be deported to concentration camps. On the run alone, Georg has nothing but the comfort of the angel in a nursery rhyme.
